Educational Aims
To provide the student with knowledge of human genetics, as applied to common genetic disorders to inform the study of Medicine.Learning Outcomes
Knowledge and Understanding. At the end of this module the student should be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:
- chromosomal structure and karyotyping
- the mechanism of genetic inheritance and its role in disease
- DNA replication, nuclear division and techniques employed in gene manipulation and biotechnology
Intellectual Skills. At the end of this module, the student should be able to demonstrate:
- the ability to assimilate information on a specialist topic and present it in a clear, structured manner
- the ability to describe chromosome and DNA structure in health
- the ability to describe how genetic mutation occurs and the effects it may have on health
- the ability to express an informed opinion within the area of genetic modification and gene technology
Professional Practical Skills. At the end of this module the student should be able to demonstrate:
- the ability to use IT resources for effective organisation, presentation and basic analysis of data
- the ability to follow laboratory methods when carrying out practical investigations
- the ability to use information from genetic pedigrees for problem solving and decision making
Transferable (key) skills. At the end of this module, the student should be able to:
- develop learning and study techniques which promote lifelong learning, and understand different methods of teaching and learning
- take responsibility for their own learning, reflect upon and assess their own progress, strengths and weaknesses
- demonstrate competence in a range of IT skills
- learn to search for, select and use information to solve problems and make decisions
