Summary
This module is based on a multidisciplinary approach to the study of drug action and the different pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments. The first part of the module will cover all the key basic concepts and principles of pharmacology and drug action. These principles will be reinforced during the second part of the module by delivery of practical sessions and tutorials, where the students will be able to apply the concepts to different treatment regimens for a range of diseases.
Target Students
Students enrolled on Part I of the BSc in Medical Physiology.
Classes
Delivery will be via a combination of lectures, complemented with tutorials and workshop/practical sessions (1-2 hrs). Online learning and directed components provide an approximate content hourage of 37 hours. Activities may take place every teaching week of the Semester or only in specified weeks.
Assessment
- 50% Coursework 1: Poster project: group scientific poster and oral presentation with criteria discussion and peer-assessment
- 50% Exam 1 (2-hour): Multiformat (MFQ) and Short answer questions (SAQ) online exam (ExamSys)
Assessed in both autumn & spring semest
Educational Aims
This module aims to provide students with the appropriate knowledge and understanding of the principles of pharmacology and therapeutics so that they can successfully undertake Part II taught modules and project work where treatment of disease is an integral part of the learning. Students will also acquire transferable, professional, and scientific skills to provide a foundation for Part II of the programme.Learning Outcomes
describe the principles of drug action, including molecular targets for drugs, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics
describe basic pharmacology of the central and peripheral nervous system
compare the action of a range of drugs used to mimic and modify body function, including those clinical use
describe the aims and principles of pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment to a range of diseases
acquire integrated understanding of the common approaches for treatment of diseases affecting several body systems
Analyse data derived from pharmacological experiments and comment on the direction and magnitude of the effects of a number of compounds used
Analyse data from pharmacokinetic studies and comment on factors such as drug absorption, metabolism and elimination, and drug half-life
Critically evaluate published scientific data regarding the effectiveness of various methods for the treatment of disease
search, interpret and analyse pharmacological information from different sources, including statistical analysis of experimental data (univariate methods)
Independent study skills to support life-long learning and professional development
Effective communication skills and good interpersonal skills to support work in teams
An understanding and respect for the appropriate ethical and legal requirements and develop a recognition of the psychosocial implications of illness and therapeutic strategies
The ability to search for relevant information from the scientific literature for independent, enquiry based learning
Understanding and using academic marking criteria
Development of self-evaluation and self-efficacy via the capacity to give and receive written and oral feedback from their peers
Digital capabilities through using websites to search and source information for presentation
