Educational Aims
The concept behind this module is to combine the teaching of the molecular and cellular biology mechanisms involved in neuron connectivity, and to put these processes in the context of our current understanding of neurodevelopment and neurodegenerative diseases.By focusing on the biology of the neuron and the axon as a cellular compartment, we will be able to teach those processes that are crucial to the formation of brain’s neuronal netowrks. Moreover, since the loss of neuron connections has been associated with early pathology in the majority of neurodegenerative diseases, the topic provides a clear link to relevant clinical aspects of current and future medical practice.During the module “Neuron Connectivity and Brain Function: from development to degeneration” students will build on previous learning and acquire knowledge to extend and deepen their understanding of the cellular and molecular aspects that control the development of neuron connectivity and brain function. The emphasis of the latter part of the module on the loss of neuron connections that is at the basis of many neurodegenerative diseases will allow the students to gain knowledge on novel areas of research, with potential implications in future clinical practice. The module is designed so that students can attain some of the outcomes specified by the GMC in Outcomes for Graduates (2018) in the areas of Professional values and behaviours; Professional skills; and Professional knowledge. These are detailed in the Module Learning Outcomes.Learning Outcomes
The student will be able to meet areas within the GMC outcomes as follows. The full wording is found in Outcomes for Graduates (2018).
