Educational Aims

The main objectives of this new module is to inspire students in involving patients and the public in research. The expertise, insight and experience of patients and the public is an essential part of the process by which research is identified, prioritised, designed, conducted and disseminated. The module contains stimulating interactive discussions with clinical researchers, PPI experts and public research partners. These six workshops will provide an introduction to fundamentals in PPI and orient students to the clinical research environment in the UK, with real world examples from Nottingham research teams. Hands-on project work in small groups of up to 5 students will include writing lay summaries based on examples of research studies provided in abstract form. Students will draw on the new knowledge gained and incorporate good practice in patient involvement by then planning an online PPI session to discuss the research. This will allow them to practice the skills and behaviours required to work with patients and the public, as well as considerations for inclusivity and diversity. In the final session, students will run the online sessions with members of the module delivery team (researchers and public research partners) which will recorded and then marked as part of the assessment process. The module requirement includes substantial private study and small group work to consolidate understanding of the material covered in the workshops, and to apply the principles of PPI to a ‘real world’ research problem.Formal assessments for the module will be via the online PPI session and associated lay summary (30%) a self-reflection report on the impact of PPI (70%).
