Summary
This module aims to stimulate students to learn more about psychiatry prior to entering clinical placements in year 4. It seeks to demystify and de-stigmatise the specialty and consider how psychiatric practice differs, relative to other medical specialties, to an interested group of students.
The module consists of a combination of lectures, small group teaching, student-led presentations, group work, self-directed learning and a field trip to a psychiatric hospital, where students will be given a tour of a ward and introduced to a patient by a senior clinician. It will consider the media portrayal of the specialty, the political mental health agenda, ethical dilemmas arising in psychiatric practice and a snapshot of the remits of different sub-specialties.
It will be essential for students to demonstrate appropriate professional attitudes and behaviour.
