Educational Aims

The module is designed so that students can attain some of the outcomes specified by the GMC in Outcomes for Graduates (2018) in the areas ofProfessional values and behaviours; Professional skills; and Professional knowledge. These are detailed in the Module Learning Outcomes.During the module ‘Translational Neuro-Oncology’ students will be building on previous learning and acquiring knowledge to extend and deepen their understanding of molecular and cellular neuro-oncology, brain cancer genome biology, bioinformatics, neuro-imaging, neuropathology and neurosurgery. This will enable students to appreciate the molecular basis of malignant brain tumours, the differences between adult and paediatric brain tumours, how Darwinian evolution is transforming our understanding of neuro-oncology and what future medicines may look like. Taught elements will be within the setting of a series of lectures, but will also include an interactive tutorial, workshop and small-group visits to clinic, surgical theatre and a multidisciplinary team meeting. The result is a dynamic, multifaceted module, which will consolidate understanding of the material covered in the lectures and demonstrate an understanding of the nature and significance of the taught material.

Learning Outcomes

The student will be able to meet areas within the GMC outcomes as follows. The full wording is found in Outcomes for Graduates (2018).
