Summary
This module provides an extensive overview of the current technology and molecular techniques used in molecular biology research of human diseases, and explores the possible implications of such methods.
Target Students
Compulsory for those students taking MSci Molecular Genetics and Diagnostics U7UMOLGD (C443). The module is also suitable for students with an interest in molecular biology and the technology associated with it.
Classes
This module may be delivered through lectures, seminars, workshops and labs etc
Assessment
- 100% Exam: ExamSys Exam
Assessed by end of spring semester
Educational Aims
The module aims to give students an insight into the current and emerging technologies that are used in molecular biology research and their application in real world situations.Learning Outcomes
- Understand the contribution of molecular genetic technologies to disease diagnosis to include the types of equipment used and the analytical methods applied for analysis. These may include for e.g. next and 3rd generation DNA and RNA sequencing methods, proteomics, CRSPR/Cas, GWAS, FACS etc.
- Appreciate and to then be conversant with some of the methodologies available.
- Acknowledge the limitations strengths and weaknesses of the technology.
- Critical analysis of scientific literature.
- Independent learning.
