Summary
This module will illustrate how viruses interact with cells, what are the underlying molecular mechanisms of infection and replication, and how these interactions lead to clinical disease.
Target Students
Priority to students on the MSc Clinical and Molecular Microbiology andMSc Microbiology and Immunology.
Classes
This module may be delivered through lectures, seminars, workshops and labs etc
Assessment
- 50% Coursework 1: Moodle based coursework assignment.
- 50% Coursework 2: Critical analysis of a scientific study.
Assessed by end of spring semester
Educational Aims
This module will illustrate how viruses interact with cells, what are the underlying molecular mechanisms of infection and replication, and how these interactions lead to clinical disease.Learning Outcomes
Able to describe in detail and with specific examples, the replication cycles of important human viral pathogens. Students will be able to contrast the general mechanisms and requirements of viruses depending upon the nature of their genomes.
Able to describe in detail and with specific examples, the pathogenesis of clinically relevant viruses and the host and viral factors that influence disease outcome. Students will be able to describe the mechanisms of action for common interventions and discuss potential limitations
Able to apply the knowledge gained to discuss the likely transmission route(s), disease outcome(s) and primary intervention targets to different viruses.
