Summary

This module provides an overview of the key nutritional and exercise physiological mechanisms involved in the regulation of human metabolism in health and disease. The module is designed to enable students to develop a robust knowledge and understanding of 1) the involvement of nutritional factors and exercise in the regulation of energy balance and metabolism, 2) the key physiological mechanisms linking abnormal nutrition and exercise patterns to the risk of developing cardiovascular and metabolic diseases such as obesity, diabetes or coronary heart and liver diseases, and 3) the evidence on the efficacy of nutrition and exercise interventions for prevention and treatment of cardio-metabolic disorders and neuromuscular disease. Specific emphasis will be placed on the role of skeletal muscle in the maintenance of normal metabolism and in the pathogenesis of cardio-metabolic diseases.

Target Students

BSc Hons Sport and Exercise Science (U6USPEXS / C600) students only.

Co-requisites

Assessment

Assessed by end of autumn semester

Educational Aims

This module will provide students with: An introduction to knowledge and critical appraisal of current evidence linking nutrition and exercise to the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases in humansAn advanced understanding of the metabolic roles of nutritional factors and exercise in the pathogenesis of obesity and liver diseaseAn advanced understanding of the metabolic roles of nutritional factors and exercise in the pathogenesis of diabetesAn advanced understanding of the metabolic roles of nutritional factors and exercise in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular diseasesAn opportunity to understand the principles of the main nutrition and exercise therapeutic approaches for the prevention and treatment of cardio-metabolic and neuromuscular diseases.

Learning Outcomes

A student who completes this module will be expected to be able to:
A1. demonstrate a comprehensive and systematic understanding of all key aspects and concepts of skeletal muscle physiology, metabolism and nutrition in the context of sport and exercise.

A3. to understand the role of sport and exercise science in the prevention and management of major public health issues, such as sedentariness, deconditioning, mental health and ageing.

A4. to understand how the human body (from the molecular to whole body level) interacts with its environment and changes to its environment.

B1. to think independently while giving due weight to the arguments of others through research, critical analysis and interpretation of published information and data.

B3. acquire information systematically, process it effectively, and draw appropriate conclusions.

B9. demonstrate numeracy and written and oral communication skills including writing and constructing scientific documents and making oral presentations on scientific topics.
