Summary
This module will equip students with a variety of research methods relevant to their upcoming research project. The importance of correct study design will be emphasized, as well as the ethical considerations when conducting human experiments. Data and statistical analysis techniques appropriate to sport and exercise research will be explained, as well as their importance when deciding on study design.
Target Students
BSc Hons Sport and Exercise Science students only.
Classes
- One lecture each week for 6 weeks
This module may be delivered through lectures, seminars, workshops and labs etc.
Assessment
- 100% Exam (2-hour): In-person, open book, in-person, computer based assessment using IT facilities with access to a computer statistical package (standalone version of SPSS).

Educational Aims
The aim of this module is to equip students with a series of experimental design and analytical skills that can be applied to their final year research project. This will include how to design experiments for achieving the desired outcome, handling the recruitment and management of human volunteers to appropriate ethical standards, and teaching students correct data analysis techniques to be applied to their acquired data.Learning Outcomes
A student who completes this module will be expected to be able to:
A7. understand (a) the ethical principles for research in humans and (b) the requirements for gaining ethical approval for research projects and monitoring their implementation throughout the project.
