Summary

This module is designed to give students an in-depth understanding in the biology of ageing, the effects of ageing on physiology and a focus on areas of importance to ageing biology and the progression to disease and frailty. Being an advanced module, the student will gain a higher level of understanding of the processes of ageing and the outcomes of ageing.

The course will contain 7 lectures covering; the basic concepts in the biology of ageing, the processes of cellular ageing and the physiology of ageing. The lecture series will be followed by 3, 1.5-hour seminars to present posters on a chosen topic and receive feedback.

Target Students

BSc Hons Sport and Exercise Science students only.

Classes

This module may be delivered through lectures, seminars, workshops and labs etc.

Assessment

Assessed by end of spring semester

Educational Aims

The aim of this module is to give students a broad-based understanding of the biology of ageing, the effects of ageing on physiology and a focus on areas of importance to ageing biology and the progression to disease and frailty. Being an advanced module, the student will gain a higher level of understanding of the processes of ageing and the outcomes of ageing. The students will be assessed on their poster presentations and have the opportunity to discuss and critique each other’s presentations. Each lecture will come with a clear set of learning objectives and key references to guide students on presentation and report content. The students will benefit from a course developed by an active research member of the centre for musculoskeletal ageing research who has expertise in this area.

Learning Outcomes

A student who completes this module will be expected to be able to:
A1. Describe the basic concepts in the biology of ageing.
A2. Understand the processes of cellular ageing.
A3. Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the physiology of ageing.
A4. To understand how the human body (from the molecular to whole body level) interacts with its environment and changes to its environment.

A student who completes this module will have the ability:
B1. To think independently while giving due weight to the arguments of others through research, critical analysis and interpretation of published information and data.
B2. To acquire information systematically, process it effectively, and draw appropriate conclusions.
B3. To initiate and carry out an independent research project to a very high standard.
B4. To demonstrate numeracy and written and oral communication skills including writing and constructing scientific documents (e.g. research reports and abstracts) using appropriate styles, conventions, and terminology and making oral presentations on relevant scientific topics.
