Summary
This module aims to provide students with an understanding of the practical applications of exercise and health psychology. Topics covered will include the psychological determinants of exercise and health in different populations, psychological theories and models of physical activity and health promotion and adherence, the relationship between exercise and mental health and well-being, and the design, delivery and evaluation of psychological interventions and public health programmes.
Target Students
BSc Hons Sport and Exercise Science students only.
Classes
This module may be delivered through lectures, seminars, workshops and labs etc.
Assessment
- 100% Exam 1 (2-hour): Written essay-based end of year exam

Educational Aims
This module is designed to enable students to: Develop an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the contemporary concepts, theories, principles and issues in applied exercise and health psychology;Critically analyse theory, research and practice within the field of applied exercise and health psychology; Enhance career and employment prospects by developing a range of transferable skills.Learning Outcomes
A student who completes this programme will be expected to be able:
A1. to demonstrate a comprehensive and systematic understanding of Exercise and Health Psychology.
A3. to understand the role of Psychology in the prevention and management of major public health issues, such as sedentariness, deconditioning, mental health and ageing.
A5. to recognise and explain current trends and developments in Exercise and Health Psychology.
A6. to manage their own learning and use primary sources of knowledge to access the forefront of current research.
B1. to think independently while giving due weight to the arguments of others through research, critical analysis and interpretation of published information and data.
B2. to devise and sustain arguments using ideas and information at the forefront of Exercise and Health Psychology
B3. to acquire information systematically, process it effectively, and draw appropriate conclusions.
B4. to apply accurately subject-specific techniques of analysis and enquiry.
B6. to work safely in the field and laboratory, using appropriate equipment and instruments and assess related health and safety issues in order to make and record accurate observations and measurements.
B9. to demonstrate numeracy and written and oral communication skills including writing and constructing scientific documents (e.g. research reports and abstracts) using appropriate styles, conventions, and terminology and making oral presentations on relevant scientific topics.
B10. to develop effective ways of working including productive team-work, scheduling of tasks and time management to meet deadlines.
B11. to demonstrate digital literacy.
