Summary

This module will provide all the fundamental knowledge for basic and clinical haematology, re-visiting the physiology of blood components in more details and covers the common pathologies of red blood cells (Anaemias), white blood cells (Leukemias & lymphomas) as well as platelets (coagulopathies). Transfusion and detecting blood incompatibilities will be covered in this module to provide students will a suffient knowledge about serological and haemagglutination tests in blood banks.

Assessment

Assessed by end of autumn semester

Educational Aims

The module will cover the normal physiology of red, white blood cells, plateletes and coagulation factors. The metabolism and transportation of iron, essential blood vitamins (Folate and B12), different type of anaemias related to morphology and haemoglobin variants. Blood clotting and coagulation and blood incompatibilities in newborn and adults. The basic proceudres in blood banks and prevention of transfusion incompatibilities, manual and automated methods of investigations: cell identification and counting, haemoglobinometry, coagulation tests. White cells abnormalites and overview of cytotoxic drugs used in blood malignancies.

Learning Outcomes

The graduate will be able to apply to: 1) describe the normal physiology of blood cells, 2) explain the pathologies of blood cells 3) discuss the various methods used in haematological diagnosis and blood transfusion and 4) analyse common haematological data for diagnosing common health condition.
