Summary
The module will consider the causes of diseases including genetic, traumatic and infective factors. An overview of the immune system and its role in disease progression will be presented. Particular emphasis will be placed on cardiovascular disease, cancer and respiratory disease, disorder of the endocrine, renal, gastrointestinal and blood. Students will also be introduced to the concepts of disease pathology and basic diagnosis of different body system, and will complement what students learn about the normal physiology of the various body system taught in LIFE1052 Human Physiology.
Target Students
This module is offered to students of Biomedical Sciences only.
Classes
- One 2-hour workshop each week for 2 weeks
- One 2-hour lecture each week for 15 weeks
Assessment
- 25% Assignment: Case study summary 1000 words
- 75% Exam 1 (1-hour): Rogo online assessment (1h)
Educational Aims
The aim of this module is to introduce students to the principles of disease aetiology and diagnosis and to consider the pathophysiological consequences of common diseases likely to be seen in clinical practice by qualified biomedical scientist or health-related professionals. The students will have a holistic understanding of different body system, from normal physiology to the disease aetiology and diagnosis. Such understanding will help them to be a better biomedical scientist or health-related profession.Learning Outcomes
- MLO1: Explain the mechanism of disease aetiology (Understanding)
- MLO 2: Describe pathophysiology of human diseases (Application)
- MLO 3: Summarise scientific information about a particular disease (Evaluation)
- MLO 4: Relate the diagnostic findings to a disease (Application)
Conveners
