Summary
This module considers the leading issues in contemporary domestic pre-trial criminal justice practice. It critically examines the law, policy and practice surrounding criminal investigations and prosecution, and criminal procedure.
Target Students
Available to UG Year 2 and Final Year students on the LLB or BA programmes in Law. Also available to exchange students hosted by the School of Law.

Educational Aims
To develop a sound understanding of the key stages of the pre-trial criminal process; the roles, rights and responsibilities of key actors and agencies involved; and the legal, social, political, and institutional context of criminal justice practice and procedure.Learning Outcomes
By the end of this module, students will have developed the following:
Knowledge and understanding
- In-depth knowledge of the key pre-trial stages of the criminal justice process;
- Detailed understanding of the different - and often conflicting - principles, rules and values underpinning criminal justice policy and procedure.
Cognitive/analytical skills
- Ability to describe and critically analyse criminal justice practice against the backdrop of relevant law and policy.
- Identify and critically evaluate competing claims and arguments surrounding the legal, social, political, institutional and ethical dimensions and implications of criminal justice practice.
Practical/professional skills
- Independent research skills.

- Research, analytical and written skills as above.
