Summary

This module considers the substantive guarantees and the control system for the protection of human rights in the European Convention on Human Rights. 

Target Students

Only available to UG Year2 or Final Year students in the School of Law andexchange students hosted by the School of Law.

Educational Aims

To give students an understanding of the law of the European Convention on Human Rights and the remedies thereunder.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge and understanding:

The module will provide students with an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the operation of the European Court of Human Rights and the key legal, political and other challenges this court faces in its operation. Students will consider a selection of the rights protected by the European Convention on Human Rights and how they have been interpreted by the European Court. The module will promote an understanding of the nature of international human rights obligations as well as the operation of the international body entrusted with the task of promoting and protecting these European human rights.  

Intellectual skills;

The module will develop analytical legal skills (including reading, comprehension and critical thinking) related to reading international treaty texts and case law, as well as solving complex problems.  

Professional practical skills:

The module will provide students with foundational knowledge of the European Convention system that is necessary for any work in the human rights sector, governmental or non-governmental. Students will learn how to respond to contemporary challenges to the protection of human rights through the application of principles developed by the European Court of Human Rights.  

Transferable (key) skills:

There will be a focus on discerning legal principle from a substantial body of case law, which is a key skill for lawyers. The module will also facilitate development of skills of identifying and resolving the complex legal and political problems that face any institution tasked with protecting human rights.
