Summary
This module extends to an advanced level of Mandarin, strengthening the four skills of reading, listening, speaking and writing to enable students to gather and process information accurately and quickly through materials from a variety of sources, including original content in the target language, to enable students to be fully capable in all areas of the language.
The module will be delivered in a blended modality for which students will have access to a virtual learning environment with extra activities and resources.
Students are also required to undertake a programme of autonomous learning.
Requisites: Successful completion of Mandarin 5A or equivalent qualification. Students must not choose this course if they are over-qualified. The Language Centre reserves the right to check students’ prior learning and qualifications and to move students to a more appropriate level if necessary.
Please note this module is assessed at the end of in Spring semester. First sit/ Resit exams are scheduled normally in the summer and can take the same form as the missing/ failed component of the assessment (exam, essay etc.) or other form, as decided by the School.
Target Students
-Priority will be given to students who are doing this module as a compulsory element of their degree.-Successful completion of Mandarin 5A or equivalent qualification.

The 2 hour seminar will be delivered online.
Assessment
- 50% Oral exam: Oral, 20 min
- 50% written exam (2-hour): Written 2 hours

Educational Aims
This module aims to consolidate and extend the students’ knowledge of the subject by developing the four main language skills of speaking, writing, reading and listening. Special emphasis will be put on developing more sophisticated oral and written skills, enabling the students to deal proficiently and accurately with real-life situations (such as information-retrieval from written and spoken sources, report-writing in the Target Language).Learning Outcomes
The course builds on the skills acquired from Level 5A, particularly working in small groups to develop presentation skills and to present a coherent argument or explanation. The materials chosen for study increase cultural awareness.
