Summary

This module introduces students to specialised Mandarin terminology used in the business environment. The manners and cultural niceties that characterize business interactions will also be introduced. Each session will consist of a variety of activities to allow students to practice operating in a Chinese business setting. The module will be delivered in a blended modality for which students will be given access to a virtual learning environment with extra activities and resources.

Requisites: Successful completion of Mandarin 3B or equivalent qualification. Students must not choose this course if they are over-qualified. The Language Centre reserves the right to check students’ prior learning and qualifications and to move students to a more appropriate level if necessary.

Please note this module is assessed at the end of in Autumn semester. First sit/ Resit exams are scheduled normally in the summer and can take the same form as the missing/failed component of the assessment (exam, essay etc.) or other form, as decided by the School.

Target Students

Priority will be given to students who are doing this module as a compulsory element of their degree.Successful completion of Mandarin 3B or equivalent qualification.

Educational Aims

This course aims to enhance students’ linguistic skills and communicative competence while preparing them to communicate more comfortably and confidently in the Chinese business environment. It is also intended to help students gain a better understanding of the macro and micro Chinese economic situation and the specific market needs of the country.

Learning Outcomes

A.  Knowledge and Understanding of:
• A1 Differences between Mandarin used in daily life and in business environment
• A2 Appreciate the cultural differences between the Chinese business environment and that in students’own country.

• B1 Understand the Chinese linguistic system both spoken and in written form in the context of the studied topics related to the business environment
• B2 Develop an awareness of cultural specificity regarding business

• C1 Produce personal CV in Mandarin; preparation of short report and written presentations on topics covered
