Summary
This module further extends the intermediate level of Mandarin and of the four skills of reading, listening, speaking and writing acquired in Mandarin 4A. The aim is to enable students to gather and process information accurately and quickly through discussion, from the media, and from spoken and written sources.
The module includes three types of assessment format: Oral Exam (50%), Written Exam (50%), and a formative assessment in the form of an online mid-term assessment, which does not contribute to the final mark.
Requisites:
Students enrolling this module should have successful completion of Mandarin 4A, or an equivalent qualification. The Language Centre reserves the right to check students’ prior learning and qualifications and move students to a more appropriate level if necessary.
Please note this module is assessed at the end of in Spring semester. First sit/ Resit exams are scheduled normally in the summer and can take the same form as the missing/ failed component of the assessment (exam, essay etc.) or other form, as decided by the School.
Target Students
Priority will be given to students who are doing this module as a compulsory element of their degree.

Educational Aims
This module aims to consolidate and extend the students’ knowledge of the subject by developing the four main language skills of speaking, writing, reading and listening. Special emphasis will be put on developing more sophisticated oral and written skills, enabling the students to deal proficiently and accurately with real-life situations (such as information-retrieval from written and spoken sources, report-writing in the Target Language).Learning Outcomes
The course builds on the skills acquired from Level 4A, particularly working in small groups to develop presentation skills and to present a coherent argument or explanation on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options. The materials chosen for study increase cultural awareness.
