Summary
-This module aims to develop speaking, writing and comprehension skills in more complex situations than in previous stages.
-Students should develop a more detailed understanding of authentic materials and an awareness of the cultures in the countries where the target language is spoken.
-The sessions will consist of a variety of activities arising from the themes and structures that underpin the course programme.
-The module will be delivered in a blended modality for which students will have access to a virtual learning environment with extra activities and resources.
-Students are also required to undertake a programme of autonomous learning.
Requisites:
-Successful completion of Communicative Japanese 3A, or equivalent qualification.
- Students must not choose this course if they are over-qualified. The Language Centre reserves the right to check students’ prior learning and qualifications and to move students to a more appropriate level if necessary.
Please note this module is assessed at the end of in Spring semester. First sit/ Resit exams are scheduled normally in the summer and can take the same form as the missing/ failed component of the assessment (exam, essay etc.) or other form, as decided by the School.
Target Students
-Priority will be given to students who are doing this module as a compulsory element of their degree.-Successful completion of Communicative Japanese 3A or equivalent qualification.
Classes
- One 1-hour seminar each week for 11 weeks
- One 2-hour seminar each week for 11 weeks
the second seminar will be delivered online
Assessment
- 50% Oral exam: Oral, 20 min
- 50% written exam (1-hour): Written examination, 1 hour

Educational Aims
Upon the completion of this level, students are expected to be able to:-Understand the main points of clear input on matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, and news, etc.-Deal with problems likely to arise in everyday life.-Produce connected texts on different topics of personal interest.-Describe, argue, and discuss experiences, events, plans, and personal opinions.-Develop their awareness of autonomy in language learning under the guidance of their language tutor.Learning Outcomes
A. Knowledge and Understanding: the Japanese language at post-beginner level. More extended topic areas and grammatical structures which build on the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing already developed in the Stage 2.
B. Intellectual skills: Ability to manipulate the language with the skills acquired. Acquisition of a more in-depth knowledge of Japanese culture
C. Professional Skills: Preparation of more substantial oral and written presentations on topics covered. Listening with discrimination in order to elicit information from longer and more complex passages. Reading with discrimination in order to elicit information from longer and more complex passages
D. Transferable Skills: Pair and group work. Essay writing. Time management. Independent language study. Ability to organise and present material. Ability to communicate effectively. Use of digital technologies and platforms to communicate, collaborate and learn.
