Summary
- The module develops the student’s ability to communicate at a beginner level. The basic structure of the language acquired in Communicative Japanese 1B will be extended and consolidated.
- Students should develop a basic understanding of everyday vocabulary and an awareness of the cultures in Japan.
- The sessions will consist of a variety of activities arising from the themes and structures that underpin the course programme.
- The module will be delivered in a blended modality for which students will have access to a virtual learning environment with extra activities and resources.
- Students are also required to undertake a programme of autonomous learning.
Requisites:
• Successful completion of Communicative Japanese 1B or equivalent qualification.
• Students must not choose this course if they are over-qualified. The Language Centre reserves the right to check students’ prior learning and qualifications and to move students to a more appropriate level if necessary.
Please note this module is assessed at the end of Autumn semester. First sit/ Resit exams are scheduled normally in the summer and can take the same form as the missing/ failed component of the assessment (exam, essay etc.) or other form, as decided by the School.
Target Students
-Priority will be given to students who are doing this module as a compulsory element of their degree.-Successful completion of Communicative Japanese 1B or equivalent qualification.

- One 1-hour seminar each week for 11 weeks
- One 2-hour seminar each week for 11 weeks
the second seminar will be delivered online
Assessment
- 50% Oral Exam: Examination, Oral 10 min
- 50% Written Exam (1-hour): Written examination, 1 hour

Educational Aims
Students will continue to learn and practise the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing with an emphasis on developing an interactional competence for specific purposes related to the course programme. This will enable them to manipulate the language and participate effectively in everyday social situations.Learning Outcomes
A. Knowledge and Understanding of: Japanese pronunciation; Standard Japanese spelling; initio Japanese syntax and initio Japanese sentence semantics; Gist comprehension of audio material; Basic oral skills
B. Intellectual skills: The ability to understand the standard Japanese linguistic system both spoken and in the written form in the context of the topics studied; Develop an awareness of cultural specificity
C. Professional Skills: Spontaneous and controlled production of small conversations on topics covered; Listening with discrimination in order to elicit information; Reading with discrimination in order to elicit information
D. Transferable Skills: Pair and group work; Time management; Independent language study; Ability to organise and present material; Ability to communicate effectively. Use of digital technologies and platforms to communicate, collaborate and learn.
