Summary

The basic structure of the language will be extended and reinforced through topics related to everyday life. All four skills of speaking, reading, writing and listening are covered. The grammatical structures acquired in 1A will be consolidated and developed further. Students are also required to undertake a programme of autonomous learning. The module will be delivered in a blended modality for which students will be given access to a virtual learning environment with extra activities and resources.

Requisites:

Successful completion of Mandarin 1A or an equivalent qualification. Students must not choose this course if they are over-qualified. The Language Centre reserves the right to check students’ prior learning and qualifications and to move students to a more appropriate level if necessary.

The module includes three types of assessment format: Oral Exam (50%), Written Exam (50%), and a formative assessment in the form of an online mid-term assessment, which does not contribute to the final mark.

Please note this module is assessed at the end of Spring semester.  First sit/ Resit exams are scheduled normally in the summer and can take the same form as the missing/ failed component of the assessment (exam, essay etc.) or other form, as decided by the School.

Target Students

Priority will be given to students who are doing this module as a compulsory element of their degree.

Classes

The third 2-hour seminar will be delivered online.

Assessment

Assessed by end of spring semester

Educational Aims

Students will continue to practise the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing as well as acquiring further basic grammatical structures.
