Summary
The basic structure of the language will be extended and reinforced through topics related to everyday life. All four skills of speaking, reading, writing and listening are covered. The grammatical structures acquired in 1A will be consolidated and developed further. Students are also required to undertake a programme of autonomous learning. The module will be delivered in a blended modality for which students will be given access to a virtual learning environment with extra activities and resources.
Requisites:
Successful completion of Japanese 1A or an equivalent qualification.
Students must not choose this course if they are over-qualified. The Language Centre reserves the right to check students’ prior learning and qualifications and to move students to a more appropriate level if necessary.
Please note this module is assessed at the end of Spring semester. First sit/ Resit exams are scheduled normally in the summer and can take the same form as the missing/ failed component of the assessment (exam, essay etc.) or other form, as decided by the School.

Assessment
- 50% Oral Exam: Examination, Oral 20 min
- 50% Written Exam (1-hour-30-minute): Written examination, 90 min

Upon the completion of this level, students are expected to be able to:-Understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of concrete needs.-Talk about themselves and others, describe their most immediate environment and the basic elements of the culture of the target linguistic communities.-Express simple opinions and give simple justifications.Learning Outcomes
If you complete 20 credit modules stage 1 in a language (Semesters A and B) successfully, your level in relation to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) will be equivalent to A1+.
At the end of the academic year, students:
Can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type.
Can talk about themselves and others, describe their most immediate environment and basic elements of the culture of the target linguistic communities.
Can express simple opinions and give simple justifications.
