Summary

This module introduces the basic structure of the language and develops the students’ ability to communicate at a beginner level, with an emphasis on developing interactional competence for everyday social situations.
Students should develop a basic understanding of everyday vocabulary, understand the rules of pronunciation, have a basic grasp of the relevant grammar for this level, and understand writing systems in Japanese.
They should also develop an awareness of Japanese culture.
The sessions will consist of a variety of activities arising from the themes and structures that underpin the course programme. The module will be delivered in a blended mode with students having access to a virtual learning environment with extra activities and resources.Students are also required to undertake a program of autonomous learning.

Students enrolling on this module must be complete beginners in Japanese.
The Language Centre reserves the right to check students’ prior learning and qualifications and to move students to a more appropriate level if necessary.

This module is capped to the number of 80.

Please note this module is assessed at the end of Autumn semester.  First sit/ Resit exams are scheduled normally in the summer and can take the same form as the missing/ failed component of the assessment (exam, essay etc.) or other form, as decided by the School.

Educational Aims

Upon the completion of this level, a student is expected to be able to:Introduce him/herself and others.Ask and answer questions about personal details such as where he/she lives, people he/she knows and things he/she has.Describe his/her own and others’ daily life.Express simple opinions and give simple justifications.Have simple conversations about Japanese cultural topics.Interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.

Learning Outcomes

A. Knowledge and Understanding of:
Japanese pronunciation; Standard Japanese writing systems; Basic Japanese syntax and semantics; Gist comprehension of audio material; Basic oral skills.
B. Intellectual skills:
The ability to understand the standard Japanese linguistic system in both spoken and written forms in the context of the topics studied; A more develop an awareness of cultural factors.
C. Professional Skills:
Spontaneous and controlled production of small conversations on topics covered; Listening for information; Reading for information.
D. Transferable Skills:
Pair and group work; Time management; Independent language study; Ability to organise and present material; Ability to communicate effectively. Use of digital technologies and platforms to communicate, collaborate and learn.
