Summary

The module develops the students’ ability to communicate at a beginner level. The basic structure of the language acquired in German Language and Culture 1A will be extended and consolidated.
This module assumes no prior knowledge of the language. It introduces the basic structure of the language and develops the students’ ability to communicate at a beginner's level.
Students should develop a basic understanding of everyday vocabulary, understand the rules of pronunciation and have a basic grasp of the relevant grammar for this level. They should also develop an awareness of the cultures in the countries where the target language is spoken.
The sessions will consist of a variety of activities arising from the themes and structures that underpin the course program. The module will be delivered in a blended mode with students having access to a virtual learning environment with extra activities and resources. Students are also required to undertake a program of autonomous learning.

Successful completion of German Language and Culture 1A, or equivalent qualification.
The Language Centre reserves the right to check students’ prior learning and qualifications and to move students to a more appropriate level if necessary.

Please note this module is assessed at the end of Spring semester. First sit/ Resit exams are scheduled normally in the summer and can take the same form as the missing/ failed component of the assessment (exam, essay etc.) or other form, as decided by the School.

Students enrolling on this module must be beginners in German (A1.1).

Educational Aims

Students will learn and practise the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing with a emphasis on developing an interactional competence for specific purposes related to the course programme, and a basic cultural awareness from the target language countries.

Learning Outcomes

A. Knowledge and Understanding:
German pronunciation; Standard German spelling; Basic German syntax and semantics; Gist comprehension of audio material; Basic oral skills.
B. Intellectual skills:
The ability to understand the standard German linguistic system in both spoken and written forms in the context of the topics studied; A more developed awareness of cultural factors.
C. Professional Skills:
Spontaneous and controlled production of small conversations on topics covered; Listening for information; Reading for information.
D. Transferable Skills:
Pair and group working; Time management; Independent language study; Ability to organise and present material; Ability to communicate effectively; Use of digital technologies and platforms to communicate, collaborate and learn.
