Summary

The module teaches students how to map, understand, and critique the relationships between culture, power, people, objects, and spaces. A central principle of this module is to foster an ethical sensibility and political awareness that is about opening up to alternative encounters, ways of knowing, and new possibilities for living together. Upon completion students will be able to more creatively and ethically conduct cultural research and projects for the public, community, and private sectors.

Please note: This module is assessed at the end of Autumn semester.  First sit/ Re-sit exams are scheduled normally in the summer and can take the same form as the missing/ failed component of the assessment (exam, essay etc.) or other form, as decided by the School.

Target Students

BA students in International Communications and related programmes at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China. There is a limited number of places on this module. Students are reminded that enrolments which are not agreed by the Offering School in advance may be cancelled without notice.

Educational Aims

To familiarise students with cultural studies and cultural analysis;To encourage students to discriminate between particular theoretical positions;To enable students to analyse a range of objects, people, institutions, bodies and practices in their cultural contexts.

Learning Outcomes

  • a clear overview of the history, main issues and debates that characterise cultural analysis;
  • an ability to read and understand cultural theory;
  • awareness of and ability to intervene in the cultural dimension underpinning every aspect of social life, especially through the media and everyday practices;
  • methodological experience to be able to practice cultural analysis;
  • an understanding of how the course concepts are germane to aesthetic, cultural, social and/or political analysis
  • an increased ability to construct and defend a coherent and well-researched argument;
  • an increased ability to communicate ideas effectively both in writing and speech;
  • an increased ability to engage in critical and constructive interactions with peers and workmates;
  • an increased ability to engage in independent, creative and reflective learning;
  • an increased ability to time manage and exercise general organisational skills.
