Summary
The module will focus on the role of health promotion and public health in relation to mental health. Some of the main themes which will be covered within the module will be:
• Historical, contemporary and critical perspectives on mental health
• Stigma and discourses in relation to mental health
• Mental health and long term conditions
• Health promotion with people experiencing severe and enduring mental health problems
• Creative practice and public mental health

Classes
60 hours tutor led teaching , the remaining 140 hours are for self-directed study, tutorials and assignment development
Assessment
- 100% Presentation: Poster presentation based on a proposal for a mental health public health/health promotion innovation

Educational Aims
1. Gain an understanding of the application of the principles of health promotion and public health in relation to mental health2. Examine the dominant discourses in relation to mental health and consider the relationship of these discourse to public health and health promotion3. Examine some of the unique challenges and opportunities in relation to public mental health and health promotionLearning Outcomes
Critically analyse the role of health promotion and public health in relation to supporting mental well-being
Examine the social discourses in relation to mental health, including stigma, and how these discourses might influence the perceptions of mental health problems
Develop an understanding of some of the barriers and opportunities in relation to public mental health promotion
Demonstrate evidence-based practice in developing public health and health promotion innovations in relation to mental health
