Summary

Students will be expected to work under supervision on a dissertation of their choice related to their subject area. Students’ research work will be supported by their allocated supervisors.

In regard to the thesis, the maximum word length of the thesis is dependent on the credit size of the thesis and the following apply:

§  160 credits – 35,000

The maximum word limit is inclusive of appendices, footnotes, tables but not the bibliography. The Thesis should embody the result of the candidate’s advanced study and research.

This will be as set out in the thesis description and in line with the requirements for supervision contained in the regulations for research degreesThis module aims to enable students to devise and carry out a substantial piece of empirical research on an approved topic consistent with the requirements of an MRes program in GeographyTo provide MRes students with the opportunity to undertake a substantial project based on empirical research informed by relevant theoretical literatureTo familiarise MRes students with methodologies and research techniques appropriate for their proposed researchTo develop the skills needed to produce a clearly written, appropriately illustrated and properly referenced dissertation.

Learning Outcomes

Examine and evaluate current research and scholarship relating to a chosen topic within human geography

Apply the analytical skills necessary to formulate specific research questions, develop appropriate methodological approaches and consider relevant ethical issues

Initiate and develop a substantial piece of empirical research on an approved topic consistent with the requirements of an MRes degree

Demonstrate an ability to undertake self-directed study and employ skills in project initiation, self-organisation and time management

Produce a clearly-written, appropriately illustrated and properly referenced research dissertation

Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively in writing.
