Summary
This module will offer training for postgraduate researchers which develops core research skills in conducting a systematic literature review, delivering research seminars, and writing of a MRes thesis and scientific papers. The module will also provide information on degree rules and regulations, and guidance on the supervisor-student relationship and responsibilities.
Target Students
MRes students
Classes
The students will participate in a series of classes largely focussing on skills in areas such as research methods, information literacy and management, communication of research and professional conduct. These classes will draw upon the extensive offerings of the Graduate School where appropriate and timely and will be supplemented by bespoke classes delivered by academics in the School and/or Faculty. In the second semester, students will attend a series of research seminars delivered by staff, visitors and postgraduate researchers. During selected seminars the students will complete peer reviews. These sessions, and the module assessments, will help students to progress through their MRes degrees and towards the submission of their thesis. For the first assessment students are required to submit a systematic literature review (5000 words) of their research topic at the end of the first semester, which helps to develop clear research aims and objectives on the basis of identified gaps in the literature. For the second assessment, near the beginning of the second semester, students are required to deliver a 30-minute presentation (20 min presentation, 10 min Q&A) on their research work which focusses on justifying and receiving feedback on their methodology.
Assessment
- 60% Submission of Literature Review
- 40% Presentation Seminar
