Summary

Students will be expected to work under supervision on a dissertation of their choice related to their subject area. Students’ research work will be supported by their allocated supervisors plus relevant taught modules taught earlier in the program.

Target Students

Only available for Masters in Social Science Research (Geography) students.

Classes

Students will be allocated a supervisor to support their dissertation work.

Assessed by end of summer vacation

Educational Aims

To devise and carry out a substantial piece of empirical research on an approved topic consistent with the requirements of an MA program in Geography.To demonstrate an ability to undertake a substantial project based on empirical research informed by relevant theoretical literature.To demonstrate a range of appropriate methodologies and research techniques.To produce a clearly written, appropriately illustrated and properly referenced dissertation.

Learning Outcomes

a. Knowledge and Understanding:
• Demonstrate a comprehension of the contemporary debates within human geography
• Demonstrate knowledge of the principles of research design plus the methodological approaches and ethical considerations needed to address specific research questions within the discipline
 

b. Intellectual Skills:
• Devise and carry out a substantial piece of empirical research on an approved topic consistent with the requirements of a Masters level degree
• Demonstrate the analytical skills necessary to formulate researchable problems 
• Produce a clearly-written, appropriately illustrated and properly referenced research dissertation
 

c. Professional/Practical Skills:
• Demonstrate an ability to undertake a substantial research project in Geography using appropriate methods informed by relevant theoretical literature 
• Demonstrate an  ability to define and formulate research problems and questions and utilise a range of appropriate methodologies and research techniques 
• Bibliographic skills including the ability to identify key resources and how to use them. 
• Evaluate and critique current research and scholarship relating to a chosen topic 
• Evaluate the diversity of specialised techniques involved in collection, analysing and presenting geographical data
 

d. Transferable Skills:
• Undertake independent self-directed study and research to achieve a sustained piece of academic work
• Demonstrate skills in project initiation, management and development and the ability to communicate effectively in writing.
• Demonstrate initiative, self-organisation and time management
