Summary
This module will cover the breadth of world-leading research being carried out in the School of Geography, which is reflected in the School’s research themes: Cultural & Historical Geography, Economic Worlds, Environment & Society and Geosciences. The module examines the contested nature of knowledge and the role of ‘experts’ in contemporary society. It provides opportunity to learn more about the philosophies and methods that underpin research design. Lectures introduce the key content while students will discuss research methods and processes with academics in small group tutorials.
Target Students
Open to School of Geography Level 2 (Part I) students studying: Single subject BA/BSc Geography (L700, F800 compulsory); Geography with Business (L7N1 compulsory); Environmental Geoscience (F630 compulsory); Archaeology and Geography (LV74 optional for students intending to pursue human geography dissertations).
Classes
Teaching will comprise a combination of lectures, workshops and tutorials.

- 100% Coursework: 2,000 words

Educational Aims
This module will expose students to the breadth and depth of research undertaken in Geography and its place within contemporary knowledge debates. The module aims to develop a critical appreciation of contemporary research problems in Geography and broader issues surrounding the production and challenge of ‘expertise’.Learning Outcomes

- Identify and explain fundamental approaches to research in Geography
- Critically evaluate research findings/outputs across the breadth of Geography

- Identify steps in the research process, from problem generation through to publication

- Critically evaluate multiple forms of evidence and complex information
- Communicate complex ideas, orally and in writing.
