Summary
This module is compulsory for Environmental Science undergraduates and is spread across the autumn and spring
semesters of year one. Most of the teaching is via small group tutorials. The module introduces a range of important skills that will be used throughout your degree. In the autumn semester these include finding, reading and citing scientific literature, and writing an abstract and a literature review. In the spring semester the skills include approaches to problem-solving and data collection, and presenting results through giving an oral presentation and writing a scientific report.

Classes
- Two 2-hour practicums each week for 2 weeks
- One 2-hour lecture
- One 2-hour lecture each week for 8 weeks
Activities may take place every teaching week of the Semester or only in specified weeks. It is usually specified above if an activity only takes place in some weeks of a Semester
Assessment
- 10% Coursework 1: Abstract (max 350 words)
- 40% Coursework 2: Literature review (max 2000 words)
- 10% Coursework 3: Oral presentation (5 minutes)
- 40% Coursework 4: Scientific report (max 2000 words)
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
Use the library services effectively to search for relevant literature.
Reference sources in an appropriate style(s).
Write and construct scientific documents (e.g. literature reviews, scientific reports) using appropriate styles, conventions, and terminology.
Identify an appropriate approach for solving a quantitative problem through background and collaborative research.
Present scientific data appropriately.
