Summary
Students receive education in self-marketing and CV composition; preparing for interviews and assessment; careers routes for geographers; postgraduate study (Masters and PhD) and career planning. The module contains subject-focused vocational talks, guest lectures (eg from Royal Geographical Society-Institute of British Geographers) and topics delivered by the School's Career Advisor from the Careers and Employability Service (CES) and academics from the School of Geography. Students are introduced to the Careers and Employability Service (CES) to assist with progress during the year and attend a range of employer presentations and other events (e.g. employer fairs).
Target Students
Compulsory for all Level 1 students in the School of Geography, including students on the BA Hons Archaeology and Geography and BA Hons Geography with Business degrees. Not available to students from other schools.
Classes
Teaching will be delivered through a series of lectures.
Assessment
- 100% Coursework: This is a pass / fail module.

Educational Aims
To introduce the issues of career education and employability within the Geography undergraduate curriculum.To develop and enhance the students' key skills for use in seeking work experience, graduate employment and postgraduate opportunities.To provide students with the opportunity to critically evaluate and reflect on their personal and key skill development in the School of Geography and the University.To inform students of the role of the Careers and Employability Service (CES).Learning Outcomes
On completing the module, the learning outcomes are such that students will be able to:
- Demonstrate good communication skills in written and oral formats.
- Work independently, demonstrating effective time-management, self-organisation and initiative.
- Develop problem solving skills.
- Think critically and evaluate material from a variety of sources.
- Demonstrate competence in IT skills as a means of communication.
