Summary
A project-oriented module involving a review of publications and views on a topic allied to the chosen specialist subject. The module will also involve organisation and design of the main project. Skills will be acquired through workshops and seminars that will include:
Project planning
Health & safety including the preparation of risk assessments
Scientific Writing (LaTeX & Word)
Critical evaluation of literature
Introduction to statistics
Experimental Design
The use of Excel to plot graphs
Target Students
Students on relevant MSc Engineering Programmes.There is a limited number of places on this module. Students are reminded that enrolments which are not agreed by the Offering School in advance may be cancelled without notice.
Assessment
- 40% Coursework 1: Project Plan Report for the Individual Postgraduate Project including risks and ethics as appropriate (3000 word limit)
- 20% Coursework 2: Literature analysis of four sources relevant to the Individual Postgraduate Project
- 20% Exam 1 (1-hour): ExamSys: Experimental Design
- 20% Exam 2 (1-hour): ExamSys: Statistics
- Exam 3 (1-hour): Health and safety test (pass required)

Educational Aims
It is the aim of this module to prepare students for their individual project in the summer. It will give students a chance to practice essential project skills like finding literature, planning, assessing what is a good report and statistical analysis. The deliverables include a plan for their individual summer project.Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module students will be able to:
LO1 - Formulate and evaluate methods of experimental measurement and error analysis.
LO2 - Synthesize experimental data using a variety of software tools.
LO3 - Demonstrate the application of the main principles of project planning and management.
LO4 - Assess and mitigate against potential project risk and safety issues.
