Summary

Systemic Functional Linguistics is a major descriptive grammar of the English language. Developed originally by M.A.K. Halliday, it has proven itself highly influential as an analytical tool as applied to the domains of discourse analysis, literary linguistics, and particularly CDA (Critical Discourse Analysis), where it has become the default grammar. SFL places clause descriptions and syntax within a contextualised setting, drawing in also the ideological and interpersonal functions of language. This makes it an ideal applied grammar for exploring ideology, action and event in the world, politics, rhetoric and literary aesthetics. Examples of applied SFL include texts from these domains: political, journalistic, religious and literary texts.
