Summary
When we hear the string of sounds f-i-r-e, we need to identify the sounds, distinguish them from the murmuring of voices, bird song, background music, etc. Our mind matches the sounds f-i-r-e with a word, retrieves the meaning, and relates this to the current circumstances and responds accordingly. Because human communication most frequently occurs in speech, the focus of this pod is on understanding speech production and comprehension, how speech sounds activate meaning, and how this meaning is organized in the mind.
