Summary
Language comprehension and production are a fundamental part of human life. Many of us will have intuitions about how language learning and processing works and will probably have heard some common popular science notions about it, e.g. “children learn a second language better or more easily than adults”. However, we need evidence for intuitions and claims. We need to be able to investigate how people acquire and process language so that we can better understand how to help those with language disorders and how to best teach learners (children in their first language and people of all ages in second and additional languages). The goal of this pod is to provide students with the skills to design and carry out experiments on language acquisition and processing so that they can test their insights and address their questions.
Target Students
Students registered on the School of English online masters scheme.
Assessment
- 100% Participation: Student participation
Assessed by end of designated period
Educational Aims
This module comprises an optional component in the following pathways: Applied English, Applied Linguistics, and Applied Linguistics and ELT. It also forms a compulsory component in the Psycholinguistics pathway. As such, it contributes in its specific aims to the programme-level coverage of these pathways.Learning Outcomes
Demonstrate knowledge of the key aspects of experimental design and practice in language science (i.e., psycholinguistics).
Critically evaluate experimental methods and practice.
Apply understanding of experimental design and practice to address original research questions.
Demonstrate knowledge and skills acquired to the appropriate disciplinary and professional standard.
Assimilate and present subject-specific material in an appropriate format (assessed within the ‘Assessment Portfolio’ 1, 2 or 3).
