Summary
This pod describes the relationship between culture and communication, providing an overview of the different issues involved in the study of intercultural interactions. Given the broad scope of this field, researchers have followed different lines of investigation. This pod presents the key relevant theoretical and historical developments in the field of intercultural communication. The concept of culture and how it manifests itself in interaction is explored. Students will become familiar with the features of verbal and nonverbal communication and how they interact in complex ways to impact intercultural communication. Theoretical frameworks and analytical tools to examine and describe communication across cultures are presented including intercultural pragmatics and Hofstede’s cultural dimensions theory. This pod will help students develop an appreciation for the importance of culture in understanding intercultural communication.
