Summary
The idea of influence provides one of the module's theme.
This module is designed to develop students' skills in writing while developing their awareness of contemporary publishing. Each session includes some lecture-style input, group discussion
Target Students
Compulsory for students enrolled on the MA in Creative Writing (UNMC), available to other MA students with permission of the instructor.
Classes
- One 3-hour workshop each week for 12 weeks
Assessment
- 70% Coursework 1: Portfolio consisting of a combination of poetry and fiction, as agreed with tutors. This could, for example, be of up to: (a) 100 lines of poetry (b) 3000 words of fiction (c) A combination of 40 lines poetry & 2000 words fiction
- 30% Coursework 2: 1,500 word reflective commentary on writing process

Educational Aims
This module aims to provide students with:an advanced understanding of poetic techniques;an awareness of a range of major and marginal twentieth-and twenty-first century poets;the opportunity to experiment with a range of advanced writing processes;the experience of critically supporting their peers in the development of their writingthe ability to reflect with sophistication on the process of working towards writing publishable poemsLearning Outcomes
(a) Knowledge and Understanding:
- of some advanced conventions and relative terminology involved in the practice of writing poems
- of the work of twentieth-and twenty-first century poets
(b) Intellectual Skills:
- the ability to take a sophisticated creative approach to the writing of poems
- to contextualise a student's own poems within the work of other poets
- to criticise with sophistication the draft work of other students
(c) Professional Practical Skills:
- the ability to write accurately and grammatically and present written work according to the conventions appropriate to the study of creative writing
- the ability to construct and communicate a sustained reflective analysis of texts in writing
(d) Transferable (Key) Skills:
- communicate effectively in oral and written work
