Summary
This module examines cutting-edge approaches to the study of language and society. It investigates:
- accent and dialect
- language and culture
- language and power
- multilingualism
- language and gender
- language and sexuality
- language and ethnicity
- patterns of social negotiation
It combines a thorough investigation of sociolinguistic theories and methodologies with case study investigations. This module will be taught with a lecture followed by the opportunity for hands-on analytical work via small group teaching.
Target Students
Third year students in BA English Language and Literature, and BA ELL with Creative Writing.
Classes
- One 2-hour seminar each week for 12 weeks
- One 1-hour lecture each week for 12 weeks
Assessment
- 60% Coursework 1: 3000 word essay. Failure to comply with ethics requirements will result in a maximum possible mark of 40% for the module.
- 40% Exam 1 (1-hour-30-minute): Exam end of term

Educational Aims
The module aims to provide students witha thorough grounding in sociolinguistics,a wide-ranging knowledge of approaches to and theories of sociolinguistic phenomena, and the opportunity to engage in their own investigations of these issuesskills of practical investigation, data-collection, processing and the presentation and interpretation of data in a sociolinguistic context.Learning Outcomes
