Summary

This module, taken by BA English Language and Literature and English with Creative Writing students alongside their core first year modules in literature, language and writing, offers an introduction to key issues and skills in the discipline for those making the transition to studying English at university level in the School of English at Nottingham and its international campuses. Whereas those other modules necessarily concentrate your attention within closely-defined disciplinary boundaries (focus that is essential to learning specific skills and acquiring specialist knowledge), this module emphasises points of intersection between the diverse disciplines contained within the study of English. Taught in small groups, students are encouraged to explore – critically and reflexively – what it means to be a student of English, and are supported in developing a toolkit of study, research and communication skills which can be transferred to other modules.

Educational Aims

This module aims to introduce key issues of university study in general and the discipline of English Studies in particular to students making the transition from school to university. It will acquaint students with a cross-section of theoretical perspectives applicable to study within the School and will allow for a detailed exploration of a selection of these. General issues will include the practice of criticality and self-reflective writing; the awareness of culturally generated view points and their implications for study; and key skills in presenting and developing an argument. Discipline-specific questions will encompass issues of authority, of transmission of evidence, and an introduction to some aspects of research as conducted by staff in the School.
