Summary
This module will introduce students to the concept of scalars and vectors and give a fundamental grounding in the basic response of rigid structures to imposed forces and linear motion. It goes on to cover topics that could include: centripetal force, motion in horizontal and vertical circles, projectile motion, momentum, restitution, moment of inertia, Simple harmonic motion.
Reassessment is a single exam weighted at 100%
Target Students
Only available for students studying Foundation in Engineering and Physical Sciences
Assessment
- 30% Coursework 1: Continuous assessment with ExamSys or similar online submission
- 20% Exam 1 (2-hour): Mid-term written exam, 50 marks: January
- 50% Exam 2 (3-hour): Final Written Exam - 100 marks
Assessed by end of spring semester
Educational Aims
To develop the student’s awareness of and ability to solve basic problems in the field of statics and dynamics. To prepare students for future studies involving the study of mechanics in both static and dynamic behaviour.Learning Outcomes
Students demonstrate an understanding of vectors: addition and subtraction, resolving vectors, finding components.
Students can explain the conditions for equilibrium and calculate forces and moments for systems that are in equilibrium and accelerating systems.
Students can perform calculations involving equations of motion for constant acceleration.
Students are able to compare the concepts of work, energy and power and perform calculations.
Students can explain angular motion in terms of forces and calculate variables related to angular motion (including moment of inertia and angular momentum).
The student will demonstrate their ability to analyse and evaluate data relating to mechanics.
