Educational Aims

This module aims to:* provide a basic course in algebra, solving linear, quadratic and polynomial equations and inequalities including complex numbers, long division and partial fraction decomposition of algebraic functions.* provide a basic course in linear algebra; introducing operations and the applications of matrix and vector algebra including solving of system of equations.* compute the optimal values of a quadratic function using graph, finding the equation of tangent and normal and simplify and solve trigonometric expression/equation.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students students are expected to gain knowledge and understanding of mathematics necessary to support the application of key engineering principles. They are to apply mathematical methods, tools and notations proficiently in the analysis and solution of engineering problems:

LO1 - Apply algebraic operations to simplify algebraic expressions and solve algebraic equations
LO2 - Ability to simplify and solve problems involving polynomial functions, inequalities, trigonometry and complex numbers
LO3 - Ability to evaluate and compute the maximum and minimum values of problems using the correct algebraic skills and interpretation using graphs
LO4 - Apply vector operations to solve problems
LO5 - Apply matrix operations to solve problems
LO6 - Use appropriate techniques in linear algebra to solve systems of linear equations
