Summary

This module is designed to provide students with a basic grounding in the use of kinematics equations and Newton’s laws, the conditions of equilibrium, and the concepts of momentum, work, energy and power. It provides a basic grounding in the properties of materials on which to build if the student takes engineering courses later on in their educational career, such as an elementary understanding of phases of matter, stress-strain relationships and thermometry, thermal expansion and heat transfer mechanism. Gas laws would also be studied in this module.

Educational Aims

This module aims to provide prospective engineering students with:• a basic grounding in the behaviour of linear motion, projectile motion and Newton’s law,• a basic understanding of the mechanical properties and thermal properties of material.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course the students will be able to: (1) apply kinematics and Newton's laws in solving problems (2) demonstrate a rigorous understanding of work and power (3) develop a conceptual understanding of materials of density, pressure, elasticity and plastic deformation (4) apply the basic properties of thermometry, thermal expansion, heat transfer mechanisms and gas law
