Summary
This module is designed to provide students with a basic conceptual understanding of how loading, geometry, and material properties affect the mechanical behaviour of a circular and rotational motion. Besides, they should be able to develop problem solving competence describing the behaviour of simple harmonic motion. This module provides concept of heat, ideal gas law and kinetic theory of gases. The laws of thermodynamics would also be studied.
Target Students
Engineering Foundation
Classes
- Two 1-hour tutorials each week for 12 weeks
- Two 2-hour lectures each week for 12 weeks
- Four 2-hour laboratorys each week for 4 weeks
Assessment
- 30% Laboratory: Laboratory reports
- 20% Test: 1.5 hours In Class Exam
- 50% Exam 1 (2-hour-30-minute): 2.5 hours Final Exam
Educational Aims
This module aims to provide prospective engineering students with:• a basic grounding in the behaviour of rigid structures under circular motion and harmonic motion;• a basic understanding of the kinetic theory of gas, thermal properties of materials and the law of thermodynamics.Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course the students will be able to: (1) apply circular motion and rotational motion in solviing problems (2) demonstrate a rigorous understanding of harmonic motion (3) develop a conceptual understanding of heat, ideal gas law and kinetic theory of gases (4) apply the laws of thermodynamics
