Summary
The Fluid Dynamics module covers the concepts and fundamental principles of fluids and their applications to engineering problems.
Topics covered in this module include:
- Different fluid flow types
- Application of flow types to turbo machinery and hydraulics
- Boundary conditions
- Drag and friction
- Compressible flow
Re-assessment
Students who fail this module overall and are required to complete a re-assessment will be reassessed by retaking the failed assessment (resubmission of coursework or resit of examination). The re-assessment mark alone will be used to determine whether students satisfy progression requirements.
Target Students
Electro-mechanical engineering students.
Assessment
- 40% Coursework 1: Design based assignment.
- 60% Exam 1 (2-hour): Open book exam
Assessed by end of spring semester
Educational Aims
The aim of this module is to introduce students to the fundamental concepts and principles of Fluid Dynamics and their applications to engineering problems. The learning outcomes for the Fluid Dynamics module cover the assimilation of the fluid dynamics elements of the Electro-Mechanical engineer apprenticeship standard. The module also develops the skills of following a methodical approach and the behaviour of quality focus.Fluid dynamics: different fluid flow types and the application to turbo machinery and hydraulics: laminar and turbulent flow, boundary conditions, drag and friction, compressible flow. (KSB K17)Follow a methodical approach to engineering problem solving (KSB S2)Quality focussed. Follows rules, procedures and principles in ensuring work completed is fit for purpose and pays attention to detail / error checks throughout activities. (KSB B5)Learning Outcomes
LO1 - Comprehend the fundamental concepts of Fluid Dynamics as detailed in K17 (knowledge and comprehension). (KSB K17)
LO2 - Apply these concepts to simplified engineering scenarios (comprehension and application). (KSB K17, S5)
LO3 Recognise and construct an appropriate analysis technique and methodical approach to apply when presented with a simple engineering scenario in a fluid dynamics context (comprehension, application, moving towards analysis). (KSB K17, S2, S5)
LO4 - Clearly report analysis of data and engineering calculations using an appropriate level of explanation showing evidence of judgement in selecting analysis techniques and attention to detail and error checking throughout (comprehension, application) (KSB S1, S2, B2, B5)
