Summary
This module provides the second of two parts of a basic course in algebra, calculus, geometry and statistics introducing key concepts and techniques required to solve engineering problems. Algebra includes matrices both two-by-two and larger systems. Calculus includes second order differential equations. Statistics includes basic concepts of statistics including hypothesis formulation and testing. Throughout, the application to solving real life problems is developed.
The major assessment will be by examination with a smaller contribution from coursework assignments.
Students who fail this module overall and are required to complete a re-assessment will be reassessed by retaking the failed assessment (resubmission of coursework or resit of examination).
Students who fail the coursework will be required to resit the coursework element. Students who fail the exam will be given an alternative assessment which will be assessed via viva questioning.
Target Students
This module is only available to Apprentices on the Electromechanical Engineer Degree Level Apprenticeship.
Assessment
- 20% Coursework 1: Approx 4-6 hours work
- 20% Coursework 2: Approx 4-6 hours work
- 60% Exam 1 (2-hour): Written exam
Assessed by end of spring semester
Educational Aims
The aim is to introduce the student to key mathematics concepts, techniques and methods required to model mechanical and electrical systems in engineering.Learning Outcomes
Algebra: manipulate matrices and know how they relate to linear transformations and how to solve two-by-two systems and larger systems;
Calculus: apply calculus to modelling basic physical functions solving second order differential equations as required
Statistics: understand and use basic concepts of statistics including hypothesis formulation and testing
Follow a logical approach to solve problems in this field.
K1- Mathematics
S2- Follow a methodical approach to engineering problem solving
