Summary
The Project Design and Development module equips students with the skills and knowledge needed to design, plan, and implement research projects – the module is essential for MSc students in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering that will commence their individual project in the summer. Students will learn about the importance of developing proposals, time plans and project management, as well as the necessity to adequately explain the context and backgrounds of projects through critiquing literature. Students will engage with their assigned project supervisors to aid in this module.
Target Students
Students on a Department of Electrical and Electronic MSc Engineering Programme.
Assessment
- 80% Coursework 1: Thesis background review (Chapters 1 and 2)
- 20% Coursework 2: Proposal Defence
Assessed by end of spring semester
Educational Aims
The module provides students with a structured approach in developing and designing research projects, helping students build the necessary skills and knowledge to formulate, plan, and execute engineering research – EEE students enrolled on this module will engage with their assigned project supervisor to help develop their summer project.Learning Outcomes
Critically evaluate technical literature in order to develop a thorough background review of their proposed research project – this review will explain the context behind why their project should exist, including proposed methodologies and limitations, and assess alternative solutions to reinforce the specification of their project.
Construct a research proposal using effective communication methods to persons that are not directly knowledgeable about your research theme – planning of the proposed work and identification of knowledge/skills obtained though self-learning form part of the proposal.
