Summary
This module introduces typical analytical, computational and experimental tools used in the study of Radio Frequency (RF) and high frequency devices and systems. This module will detail the fundamentals of electromagnetic wave propagation and typical RF devices such as antennas, antenna arrays, amplifiers, mixers and metal wave guides.
Target Students
MEng, MRes, MSc and PhD students of Electrical and Electronic Engineering.
Classes
- One 2-hour lecture each week for 11 weeks
- One 2-hour laboratory each week for 11 weeks
Assessment
- 30% Coursework: 10 page report and LTspice simulation file
- 30% Coursework: Design files and documentation for an RF device
- 40% Exam (2-hour)
Assessed by end of spring semester
Educational Aims
To introduce basic analytical parameters and tools used in the study of RF devices and systems. The module will introduce students to techniques used to analyse microwave circuits to design practical RF devices, such as filters, amplifiers and antennas, to given specifications.Learning Outcomes
By the end of this module, students should be able to:
LO1 Solve problems relating to electromagnetic fields and the main characteristics of antennas.
LO2 Understand the structure, control and usage of antenna arrays.
LO3 Effectively integrate RF components into a system and analyse their performance.
LO4 Use a computational tool to design a practical RF component to a given specification.
LO5 Be able to analyse and design metal waveguides.
This module contributes to the delivery of the following Engineering Council outcomes:
M1, M2, C3 and M3
