Summary
This module covers a range of advanced power electronic techniques and implementations for a variety of applications. Reassessment of this module, if required, will be by 100% exam.
Target Students
MEng students of Electrical and Electronic Engineering and students taking MSc Electrical and Electronic Engineering
Classes
- Two 1-hour tutorials each week for 12 weeks
- Two 2-hour lectures each week for 12 weeks
Assessment
- 30% Coursework 1
- 30% Coursework 2
- 40% Exam (2-hour)
Educational Aims
This module covers the design of power electronic converters for real applications. Both component-level design and the impact of non idealities on modelling and operation are considered.Learning Outcomes
By the end of this module, students should be able to:
LO1 Describe the physical principles that underpin the selection, analysis and design of power electronic components and systems
LO2 Explain and apply the fundamental principles affecting the performance of power semiconductor devices in power electronic circuits and systems
LO3 Analyse the performance of individual power electronic components and their impact on the system performance using CAD tools
LO4 Assess analytical techniques to perform simple design calculations for isolated switching regulators using CAD tools
LO5 Assess analytical techniques to perform simple design calculations for non-isolated switching regulators
LO6 Select and apply suitable analytical techniques to analyse and design simple control systems for switching converters
